"In Ca, you really don't want to drop insurance without dropping registration FIRST." why?. Here's why:When you decide you want to drive your car again, you will need to provide the DMV with proof of insurance prior to them registering the car. It is not a 1 day task. You will fax proof, then wait 7-14 days while DMV confirms. If you need to get a smog test done, you'll still need to provide proof of insurance, BEFORE the DMV will issue you a 1 day TEMP tag, that you will need to drive the car to the smog test station. After that, you will have to go back to the DMV to register the car. It's a royal pain. The DMV assumes that if someone drops insurance without non-opping the car, that they are driving it around town without insurance.
